Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Pro Series Pilot comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the Pilot. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Built-In Controls for Adjustable Power

Pro Series Pilot Controls and Components

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.

Manual Override

The Pro Series Pilot keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, so long as you can still easily access the controller and manual override. The Pilot is especially flexible; its microprocessor allows the controller to even be mounted upside down, and it will still give you a readable display. The Pilot can go wherever you need it. Plus, the included wiring adapter eases installation overall. The custom connector end plugs into the port on your vehicle and the other end plugs into the controller.

Installation Accessories

You can use etrailer's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Video Transcript for Mount: Tekonsha Custom Wiring Adapter for Trailer Brake Controllers on a 2013 Dodge Ram Pickup

Today with this 2013 Dodge Ram 1500, we're going to be installing the Tekonsha P3 brake controller, part number 90195 and the custom fit brake control harness for this vehicle, part number 3023-P. The first thing we need to do is set our mounting bracket for our controller. Pick a suitable location that won't be in the way of the driver's knees, but will allow easy access to the manual override switch on the bottom of the controller. Once you've found a location for the bracket, make sure that there are no electrical components behind it before you secure it with the included screws. With our controller in place, we'll move on to the brake control harness. The next thing we need to do is find the electrical connections up underneath the dash of our Ram pickup. The first connection we need to make is the large square connector on the harness.

This connection will provide our ground, brake controller output, and our power. This connector on our vehicle is located directly above the gas pedal on the inside of the dash, just on the other side of the plastic about where your knee would be. You may also find this connector in the old location like where you used to in the 2012 and previous models and that's located up above the emergency brake pedal equipment. Well make this connection and then we'll move on to the brake signal connection. That's the single red wire with the small square connector.

If we go up directly above the brake pedal, we'll find this connector taped to a wire harness up high underneath the dash. We'll make this connection and all of our connections under the dash will be complete. Now there's a bit of access wire on the red connector. What we'll do is take a couple of zip-ties to secure it up and out of the way so we don't get it tangled in our feet or any of the pedals. We'll use a zip-tie here and another zip-tie here to secure the access and keep it out of the way.Now we'll take the black four-pin rectangular connector and fit it into the back of our prodigy break controller.

Once we make the connection to our brake control, we'll take any access left on the harness, coil it together and zip-tie it out of the way. That's it for our install of the Tekonsha P3 brake controller, part number 90195 with the custom fit harness, part number 3023-P, on our 2013 Dodge Ram 1500.

good value but the swivel mount being optional should be made more clear

by:

I plugged it in, just as described on a YouTube video, and all seems perfect. There were no specific instructions in the package for my application (2013 Ram 1500). In defense however, the connectors are not interchangeable so there was really no way to connect it wrong. Plenty of extra length wire to work with.

The worst part was getting under the dash!

by:

Super easy installation following my viewing the video provided by etrailer!
I'm ready to haul that new boat!!

by:

Extremely easy to install. I went back and reviewed the related videos to find the plugs. It assembled quickly once I found them

by:

Very easy plug and play ,worked great.i have it in a ram and my suburban ....with same brake controllers in both.no cut wiring, perfect length...super easy install.

by:

Great customer support during the ordering and installation process. Installation was on a 2014 Ram 1500 using an existing controller.

by:

Great deal

by:

plug and play couldn't be any better....

by:

easy to use brake box

by:

With the purchase of a new Dodge Ram 1500, I had a difficult time finding a wiring harness that adapts to the new Dodge wiring. I found this great plug in adapter on Etrailer.com and ordered it and a new Tekonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller. Etrailer shipped my order quickly. Before I installed the wiring harness and brake controller, I watched the video on Etrailer; very helpful! Installation was easy! I'll definitely use Etrailer again when I need something for our travel trailer towing.

by:

I was very happy with the Tekonsha Custom Wiring adapter I ordered through etrailer. It was good to have the perfect fit for my 2014 Dodge truck. There was no other brake controller in place for reference but the adapter made it easy and it connected to the factory wiring, just as the instructions described. I received quick follow up from etrailer to see if there was any issues. The part arrived promptly and again, was just what I needed. Thanks for the great service and efficiency.

by:

I bought a Prodigy 2 electric brake controller and cable adapter for my pickup. I read the literature provided and watched the video on the website on how to install it. From the time I opened the box to do the installation until I shut the door on a completed installation was less than 30 minutes. Very satisfied with the product, installation instructions, and fast shipping. etrailer should be everyones first stop for trailer products.

by:

Great product

by:

A simple install. The online videos provided by etrailer.com are fantastic. I use them at work a lot and I finally had a job at home where I could buy the parts from etrailer.com and repay them a little! I installed a controller on a 2013 Dodge 1500. The dash panel just above the park brake release pops out and makes a perfect hole for mounting the controller.

by:

Controller works fantastic on electric brakes on flat bed as well as Electric Hydraulic hybrid brake system on Airstream trailer. Good product and direct plug and play on 2013 Dodge 2500. I had to unplug the factory trailer brake system but this one took its place.

by:

Very easy to hook up took about 5 mins I hadn't hooked up to a trailer yet but I will shortly

by:

This wire harness for the 2013 Ram. was perfect.. I installed the P2 and wire harness in about 20 min. I had seen an online video which showed the exact location of plug ins, and it was simple... But the best part of this purchase, was the help from everyone at etrailer.com... My order was processed quickly, and followed up by not one, but two employees to make sure I had what I needed... I will order form them again, and recommend to my friends.. Thanks again toPatrick, Bridget, and George at etrailer

by:

The Tekonsha plug in wiring harness adapter worked perfectly and took about 3 minutes to install, great product. It let me use the Brake Controller from my previous truck instead of having to buy a complete new unit.

by:

I am very pleased with my 3023-P harness. But it is just a harness, so not much not to like. The ordering process through the delivery was extremely smooth. The staff at etrailer were extremely helpful, and knowledgeable. I had been given erroneous advice , as to the harness needed by an etrailer competitor. As soon as I called etrailer, I knew I had made the right decision.

by:

The easiest installation ever. Start to finish 10 minutes thats with trailer hookup. Installed mount and controler then hooked up two wires, set controler to trailer type and drove away for a test drive. Everything worked perfectly. New 2014 RAM 1500. Dealer said could not be done, whatever.

by:

Excellent product. Plug and play, no cutting or splicing needed. This is the only place I would buy a brake controller and harness for a 2013 or 14 ram.

by:

Worked like a charm! I spliced it on to my Reese brake controller and easily made the connections into my 2014 Doge Ram 1500. Thanks!

by:

Brake controller and wiring adapter worked great in my 2014 Ram truck, very easy to install. Thanks etrailer.

by:

This is an awesome Brake controller. Easy to follow installation instructions for wire harness..Quick inline adapters in most cases so very minimal splicing. Great quick release cradle for controller so you can swap between vehicles. Easy to change gain settings for use with different trailers or just different road conditions. I would recommend this product to anybody wanting or needing a brake controller. Love Love Love this product.

by:

When I called customer service about the brake controller and wiring adapter I ordered for my 2014 ram 1500, I was concerned about the possibility of having the computer reprogrammed. The rep I talked to, reassured me that I definitely did NOT have to worry about all that. The controller was so simple to install, just two plug-ins and you're good to go!! Sure enough, after I installed it, which took about 5 mins, It works great, with no worries about the computer system!! I highly recommend etrailer.com for their products and awesome customer service!!

Hello Patrick, Between the 2 brake controllers that you mentioned I would go with the the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. The main reason is because the Pro Series Pilot # 80550 is time delayed, so there will be a delay from the time that you hit your brakes in your GMC for the brakes to be applied on the trailer. Honestly, I am surprised that they still make the time delayed brake controllers. The Tekonsha P2 # 90885 is a proportional brake control, meaning that it works at the same time...

If you have the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195, for example, you will simply need to use the Custom Wiring Adapter # 3023-P for the connection. I have attached a video of the P3 and the adapter being installed on a 2016 Ram 1500 that you can use as a reference. If you do not have a Tekonsha brake controller and you are not sure what adapter you need, just...

  • Where are Connectors on 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 that Are Used to Install Brake Controller
There are two harnesses under the dash of your 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 that are used for installing a brake controller. One carries ground, 12 volt power, and a circuit back to the 7-way of the truck and the smaller one carries just the stoplight circuit. Sounds like you are looking for the one that carries just the brake signal. For that you'll be looking for a small harness above the brake pedal. I attached a picture of where you'd find it but I the easiest way to see it will be to check...

  • Troubleshooting Factory Brake Controller of 2013 Dodge Ram Not Wanting to Work with EOH Brakes
What is really frustrating about factory integrated brake controllers is that even the ones that say they are compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes don't always work properly. The factory controller of your 2013 Ram 3500 is supposed to be compatible with EOH brakes but we've found that in a lot of cases the only solution is to bypass the factory controller with an aftermarket one that consistently works with EOH actuators like the Prodigy P3 part # 90195. To install this in your...

  • Trailer Brakes Only Work with Manual Override Using Reese Pod Electric Brake Controller in 2014 Ram
It sounds like you have the red wired connected to the wrong circuit. You need to find the circuit from the cold side of your stop light switch that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed. Use a circuit tester, like # PTW2993, to check for power. If you'd rather just use the plug in adapter it's part # 3023-P.

  • Installing a Brake Controller in 2014 Dodge Ram Pickup
2013 and 2014 Dodge Ram Pickups use a different wiring harness than Rams from previous years. In the 2013 and 2014 models, the red stop light wire connects up above the gas pedal. The easiest way to install a brake controller into a 2013 or 2014 Dodge Ram is to use this Tekonsha Wiring Adapter # 3023-P, as long as you are using a Tekonsha brand brake controller. This adapter allows you to easily connect your existing wiring harness, break controller, and stop light wire. If you are using...

The best all-around brake controller we offer that has been confirmed to fit your 2014 Ram 1500 would be the P3 Brake Controller part # 90195. This controller has state of the art technology that will activate your trailer's brakes in proportion to the application of the brakes of your Ram. It also features a full color display with onboard diagnostics that make diagnosing potential trailer brake problems very easy to understand. Check out the review video I attached for more info. • Recommended Brake Controller And Installation On 2013 Ram 2500
The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 is a favorite. This unit has the same components as the poplular P2 with a few upgrades that would make me choose it over the Prodigy P2 # 90885. It is a proportional brake controller that gives you super easy to read and understand infomation on an LCD screen. There is no code deciphering, just real time infomation and great functionality that is customizable to your driving preferences. You can use the custom wiring adapter # 3023-P. I have attached...

  • Installation of Aftermarket Brake Control Harness on 2014 Ram 3500 with Factory Brake Controller
To install the # 3023-P harness into your 2014 Ram 3500 you'll need to unplug the factory brake controller and use the same connector. Then the second 2-pin connector will normally be just above the brake pedal. If you check out the linked video you can see this adapter being installed on a 2013 Ram pickup.

  • Installing Aftermarket Brake Controller on 2013 Ram 3500 with Factory Brake Controller
The adapter # HBA-CAM will not work with the HBA-12 unless the serial number is 705700 or greater. So you would need to install an aftermarket controller that is compatible with electric over hydraulic trailer brakes. I recommend using the P2 # 90885 with harness # 3023-P for a brake controller that is compatible with electric over hydraulic actuators. When you disconnect the factory controller to install the aftermarket one it will throw an error code on the dash. To get rid of that...

  • How to Install a Brake Controller on a Dodge Ram 2500
The wire colors used in the harness for the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller part # TK90160 will not be the same as the wires you will need to splice into on your Dodge Ram 2500 for installation. You will need to use a circuit tester like part # ALL640595 in order to determine the correct circuits to use for the brake controller. Depending on the year of your Dodge Ram 2500, a plug in adapter that will not require you to cut or splice any wires may be available for you. If you...

  • Troubleshooting OEM Trailer Brake Controller in 2013 Ram 1500 Pickup
If your Ram's OEM trailer brake controller actually sends out a brake signal when you press the pedal (meaning you can feel the trailer's brakes engage when you're driving) but it does NOT send out any signal when you press the manual override lever, then the unit is damaged internally and should be replaced with a high-quality aftermarket unit. You can test the controller's output right at the truck's 7-way socket if you have a circuit tester like # PTW2993, or a multi-meter like # PT89ZR....

  • Wiring Change in 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup Affecting Aftermarket Brake Controller Installation
It is correct that Dodge made changes to the vehicle wiring for brake controllers in their 2013 model year Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup. The changes relate to the use of a new multiplex wiring system. I have linked an article that explains this change. Although the under-dash connection port appears identical to earlier model years the assignment of the functions on the various wires has changed. The terminal that used to be the stop light signal, now has battery voltage whenever the ignition...

  • Trailer Brake Controller on 2013 Ram 1500 Says Trailer is Not Connected when Trailer Is Connected
The 2013 Ram 1500 was the first year for the new Powernet system used by Ram trucks. This new electrical system requires the use of a special brake controller harness, # 3023-P. Otherwise the brake controller will not receive the proper signal when you step on the brake pedal. However it should still work with the manual override. It may or may not recognize that the trailer is connected. It could be as simple as a loose connection or dirty/corroded connector or even a problem with the...

  • How to Bypass the Integrated Brake Controller of a 2014 Ram 3500 and Install a P3
You can bypass the factory brake controller on a 2014 Dodge Ram. To install an aftermarket controller you will need to disconnect the integrated trailer brake module (ITBM). Doing so will turn on a warning lamp in the dash. In order to disconnect the ITBM and not get the warning lamp, your local Dodge dealer will have to reconfigure the TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module), of the truck. Once the TIPM has been reconfigured, and the ITBM has been unplugged, you can use a vehicle specific...

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller On 2013 Dodge Ram Pickup
It sounds like there may be a loose wire somewhere in the brake controller wiring. If the problem is intermittent, then that is a sign that something may be loose. I have attached a link to a helpful article that explains how to troubleshoot brake controller installations. When checking the wiring, you may want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. In 2013, Dodge changed the wiring on Ram trucks. They now use multiplex wiring, and although they are physically the same, the wire...
